Mark Campbell-James jumped to joint second on the all-time winners list after claiming his third RYA National Match Racing Championship crown at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) this weekend (10-12 October).

In a riveting three-day contest, the 28-year-old from Godalming overcame an indifferent round-robin to hit back and defeat defending champion Nick Cherry in the semi-finals before completing a three-race clean sweep of Mason Woodworth in the final to claim his hat-trick of RYA National titles on the 20th anniversary of the trophy being awarded.

Campbell-James, who won his two other titles in 2004 (joint winner with brother Paul on percentage of wins) and 2005, now sits tied with current ISAF World Match Racing Champion Ian Williams on the overall winners’ chart with two-time Olympian and America’s Cup sailor Andy Beadsworth’s five National crowns won between 1992 and 2000 putting him at the top of the pile.

Campbell-James was unable to compete on Friday, Graham Sunderland taking the helm for the opening four races and picking up two wins and two losses. Campbell-James returned to skipper for the final two days but lost his first two races on Saturday to leave his team struggling on two wins and four losses.

However a change in tactics paid off for the team and they snuck into the semi-finals with five wins and four losses from their nine races, edging through ahead of Tom Makey, who also finished the round robin with five wins, on account of Campbell-James winning their head-to-head.

A delighted Campbell-James said: “It does feel good to have won three titles but we weren’t thinking about that going into the event, it was more about wanting to win because we have annoyingly missed out in the past two years so we are really pleased.

“I haven’t been match racing since the RYA Winter Challenge finals back in March and on Saturday we just seemed really slow for some reason and we didn’t have the boat speed. We decided then to assume that we were slower than everyone else and we would try to take everyone out on the start line and then try to stay ahead of them.

“I think Nick would have been the favourite going into the semi but although we lost the one semi-final race to him on Saturday we felt completely different on Sunday, there was a nice eight-10 knots and we seemed to go a bit better; we felt if we got a good start we could sail away, which was the complete opposite to the day before.”

Two-time and reigning champ Cherry had romped into the semis in pole position having completed an emphatic nine-race clean sweep. Woodworth’s Investec Private Bank team only lost to Cherry in the round-robin putting him in second overall and seeing him paired with third-placed Ali Hall for the semis, Hall having picked up six round robin wins.

Cherry got the upper hand over Campbell-James in the first encounter of the semis but with the deciding two races of the showdown contested on day three of the Championships, a rejuvenated Campbell-James hit back to level the scores before booking his place in the finals with race three victory, Cherry being forced to return to the start line three times enabling Campbell-James to sail into an unassailable lead.

In the other semi, Hall, who secured an impressive third place at the RYA Winter Challenge Series Grand Final in March, won the opener against Woodworth but like Campbell-James, Woodworth saved his best for Sunday and sealed back-to-back wins to land his finals spot.

But the first-to-three-points final was all one-way traffic as Campbell-James, determined to avoid a repeat of the disappointment of the past two years, clinically nailed three straight wins to convincingly wrap up the title and lift the Eacott Trophy.

Cherry also completed a three-win clean sweep over Hall in the petit-final to seal third place overall.

Ten teams go head-to-head at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) over the next three days (10-12 October) to battle it out for the title of 2008 RYA National Match Racing Champions.

After six qualifying rounds, including the RYA National Youth and Women’s Match Racing Championships, the 10 skippers competing at this weekend’s Grand Final now have the chance to get their hands on the overall National crown.

Top ranked skipper at the Finals is two-time RYA National Match Racing champion Mark Campbell-James, 28, the world number 25, who is joined by brother Paul, Skandia Team GBR 49er helm, Andrew Yates, Andy Oliver and Graham Sutherland.

However Nick Cherry, 23, has won the event for the past two years and having recently made his debut on the prestigious World Match Racing Tour at the Troia Portugal Match Cup, he will be keen to defy the rankings and complete his hat-trick of National titles.

Ali Hall secured an impressive third place at the RYA Winter Challenge Match Racing Series Grand Final earlier this year, with only established World Tour skippers Damien Iehl (FRA) and Torvar Mirsky (AUS) finishing above him in the final standings.

Meanwhile Mary Rook and Charlotte Lawrence will be looking to assert some female authority on the proceedings at WPNSA as the two women skippers in the final.

Rook sealed her place in the Grand Final 10 courtesy of her RYA Women’s National Match Racing Championship victory last month while Lawrence, who led a team to 2008 European University Women’s Match Racing Cup glory in May, booked her place in the National final courtesy of their Qualifier Three second placing.

Sam Goodchild claimed the 2008 RYA National Youth Match Racing title in emphatic style in August, the talented 18-year-old not dropping a single race over the three days of racing.

World number 79 Robbie Allam won the first qualifier back in April while Matt Greenfield’s runners-up finish at the final qualifier last weekend, where Cherry finished third, guaranteed him his Final spot.

Victory at the BUSA Match Racing Championships in April tied up Tom Makey’s National final spot and Mason Woodworth won Qualifier Two.

The racing in J80s is scheduled to get underway at 10am today (Friday) with a 15-flight round-robin, quarter-finals and semi-finals set to be contested before the overall Champion is decided on Sunday.

    RYA Press Release:

    team-goodchild-3

Team Goodchild comprising Sam Goodchild, Jonty Cook, Tom Altmann, Rory Spriggs and Nicholas Wilkinson are the new RYA National Match Racing Youth champions for 2008.

The quintet wrapped up the RYA National Match Racing Youth crown in style at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) over the Bank Holiday weekend by not dropping a race over the three days and Goodchild’s team is now in pole position to represent Britain at the prestigious Governor’s Cup in America next summer.

Seven teams from across the country plus the Netherlands travelled to WPNSA to take part in the Championships for sailors under 20 on 31 December, knowing that not only was the chance to compete at the 2009 Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship in California at stake but also a place in the RYA National Match Racing Series Grand Final in October.

With a long weekend of racing scheduled, sailors headed afloat early on Saturday morning. Leading from the start was Team Goodchild, closely followed by Mark Lees’ team who won five out of six of their races. Also doing well at the halfway stage, winning four out of six, was Gareth Henshall, whose outfit have been training at Plas Menai in the build up to this event.

The all-girl Dutch team, led by 17-year-old Marjolein Hufen, also started well winning three out of six races in their first match racing event.

Sunday saw the completion of the double round robin and the start of the semi-finals before the main event of the finals took place on the third and final day on Monday.

The 5th/6th playoff  between the teams led by Joanne Lucas and Hufen went to four matches (first to three points) while the Petit Final between the teams skippered by Owain Matthews and Mark Lees going to five matches, West Kirby’s Matthews coming from 2-0 down to win out 3-2 in a nail-biting thriller.

However with Goodchild’s crew taking no prisoners in the first two days’ of racing, the 18-year-old Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme talent was not about to fall at the final hurdle and the quintet were equally clinical in completing a 3-0 Final clean sweep over Henshall to claim the RYA National Youth title.

Goodchild and Henshall will now be invited to take part in the Series Grand Final at WPNSA on 10-12 October.

Event Director, John Burgoine said: “For many of the sailors this was their first experience of match racing, so we hope that they had a positive experience and leant a lot.  I hope to see them all either next year or in some of the upcoming qualifiers.”

Meanwhile, entries are still being welcomed for the RYA National Match Racing Series qualifier four, which takes place at WPNSA on 4-5 October. For more details contactjessica.mapplebeck@rya.org.uk
